17 septembre 1939, 4e match de la finale, Trois-Rivières à Québec

Québec avait pris les devants 2-0 dans la série la veille, avant de voir Trois-Rivières réduire l'écart avec un gain à domicile dans l'après-midi du 17. Après le match, on se dirige vers Québec où Liebhardt, qui a joué dans les majeures pas plus tard que l'année précédente (au total il a disputé 31 matchs sur 3 saisons dans les grandes ligues, avec une horifique MPM de 8.96 en 67.1 manches), est au monticule pour Québec. Liebhardt n'a pas eu énormément de succès en 1939, avec sa fiche de 6-7, mais 2 lanceurs ont déserté l'équipe avant les séries, alors on n'a pas d'autres choix. Il affronte Jim Skelton, gérant de Trois-Rivières.

Les 2 lanceurs sont en grande forme, et il n’y a toujours aucun point au tableau en 7e. Les Athlétiques menacent lorsque Del Bissonnette frappe un triple avec un retrait. On donne un but sur balles à John Kosy, qui vole le 2e but. Mais Skelton force Bill Jones à frapper une petite flèche au premier but, et il retire Liebhardt au bâton pour mettre fin à la menace.

En 8e, Al Suss débute avec un simple et il est poussé au 2e sur un amorti de Frank Mader. Ray Flood le pousse au 3e avec un simple, et Roland Gladu suit avec un double qui fait marquer Suss et fait avancer Flood au 3e. Ernie Sulik fait 2-0 avec un ballon sacrifice, et Bissonnette pousse l’avance à 3-0 avec un simple.

Liebhardt s’amène au monticule en 9e pour compléter la tâche. Il n’a toujours pas donné de coup sûr. En fait, il a été parfait dans 7 des 8 premières manches. En 5e, après 2 retraits, Phil Corrigan s’est rendu au premier but sur une erreur de Suss à l’arrêt-court. Dutch Prather a ensuite reçu un but sur balles avant que Liebhardt se ressaisisse et retire Leo Maloney.

Donc, en 9e, il force Skelton à frapper une petite flèche à Mader au 2e but, avant de retirer Bill Hoffner sur des prises. Paul Martin s’amène au bâton et il frappe un roulant à Suss, qui relaie à Bissonnette. Liebhardt a lancé un match sans point ni coup sûr!

Mentionnons que pas plus tard que la veille, dans le 2e match, Liebhardt a lancé 3.2 manches sans point, obtenu la victoire et le coup sûr victorieux. Pas mal pour un weekend! Liebhardt a retiré 6 frappeurs sur des prises dans ce match.

Skelton méritait mieux, ayant donné 9 coups sûrs et 2 buts sur balles, contre 5 retraits au bâton.

Québec prend ainsi les devants 3-1 dans série. Ils l'emporteront en six matchs.

Liebhardt reviendra dans la ligue Provinciale 10 ans plus tard, lancant pour Sherbrooke puis Granby.

September 17, 1939, 4th game of the finals, Trois-Rivières at Québec

Québec had taken a 2-0 lead in the finals the day before, before seeing Trois-Rivières cut the lead in half with a home win in the afternoon of September 17. After the game, everybody travels to Québec where Liebhardt, who pitched in the majors as recently as the year before (in total, he pitched in 31 games over 3 seasons, with a horrific 8.96 ERA in 67.1 innings) will be on the mound for the locals. Liebhardt was not particularly successful in 1939, with a 6-7 record, but 2 pitchers jumped the team just before the playoffs, and there are just no other options. He's squaring off against Jim Skelton, Trois-Rivières manager.

The 2 pitchers are in fine form, and we're still scoreless until the 7th. The Quebec Athlétiques threaten when manager Del Bissonette hits a triple with one out. John Kosy is walked and steals second. But Skelton forces Bill Jones to hit a harmless line drive to first base, and Liebhardt strucks out to end the threat.

In the bottome of the 8th, Al Suss singles and is moved to 2nd on Frank Mader's bunt. Ray Flood moves him to third with a single, and Roland Gladu follows with a double that plates Suss and moves Flood to third base. Ernie Sulik's sacrifice fly makes it a 2-0 game, and Bissonette singles for a third run.

Liebhardt returns to the mound in the 9th to concretize the win. He still has not given a hit. In fact, he was perfect in 7 of the first 8 innings. In the 5th, after 2 outs, Phil Corrigan reached on a miscue by shortstop Suss. Dutch Prather then walked before Liebhardt recovered by getting Leo Maloney out.

Thus, in the 9th, he forces Skelton to hit a weak line drive to Mader at second base, before strikout out Bill Hoffner. Paul Martin comes o the plate and hits a grounder to Suss, who relays to Bissonette. Liebhradt has thrown a no-hitter.

Let's mention that the previous day, in the second game, Liebhardt pitched 3.2 scoreless innings, colleted the win and the walkoff hit. Not a bad weekend! Liebhardt struck out in his no-hitter.

Skelton was the hard-luck loser, giving up 9 hits and walks, against 5 strikeouts.

Quebec was taking a 3-1 series lead. They took home the crown in 6 games.

Liebhardt would come back to the Provincial League 10 years later, pitching for Sherbrooke and then Granby.
